How to Identify the 10 Most Common Household Pests
Edited by: Haierc Pest Control
Misidentification is one of the most common reasons DIY pest control fails.

Here’s a quick guide to the pests most likely hiding in your home right now.

Cockroaches are oval-shaped, brown or black insects ranging from 0.5 to 2 inches. You’ll spot their droppings (tiny dark specks resembling ground pepper), egg casings, and a musty smell — usually in kitchens, behind appliances, and inside cabinets.

House ants (odorous house ants) are small, dark brown insects that trail along baseboards and countertops following invisible scent paths. Crush one and you’ll notice a coconut-like odor.

Mice leave behind rice-shaped droppings, gnaw marks on packaging, and are active at night. You may hear scratching in walls. Look for greasy rub marks along baseboards.

Rats are larger than mice and leave bigger droppings (capsule-shaped). They tend to burrow outdoors and enter homes through gaps larger than a quarter.

Termites swarm in spring. Signs include mud tubes along foundations, hollow sounding wood, and discarded wings near windows. Subterranean termites are responsible for most structural damage in the U.S.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown, flat, and apple-seed-sized. Look for rust-colored stains on mattress seams, shed skins, and tiny white eggs in fabric folds. Bites alone are not a reliable identifier.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water and are most active at dawn and dusk. The female is the one that bites, using a needle-like proboscis to draw blood for egg development.

Fleas are tiny jumping insects that target pets and humans. You’ll notice your pets scratching constantly, and you may find small dark specks (flea dirt) in pet bedding.

Spiders in homes are usually harmless but can indicate a larger insect problem since spiders follow their food. The black widow and brown recluse are the two species you need to treat seriously.

Silverfish are silver, fish-shaped insects that love humidity and starch. You’ll find them in bathrooms, basements, and bookshelves. They damage paper, glue, and fabric.

Pro tip: Use a flashlight at night to inspect along walls — most pests are nocturnal and will scatter when disturbed, giving you a clearer picture of where they’re concentrated.
